IV. Jigsaw reading

T: Children, you are to compile the meaningful texts using the sentences below. Work in groups. The group which manages to do it first will be the best.

 Text 1

1)    My brother is a student. Last year he went to London. When he came to London, he thought that something was wrong with the traffic.

2)    In London and in other towns of England the cars and buses go on the left side of the street, and not on the right.

3)    In Ukraine the cars and buses go on the right side of the street.

4)    When people in Ukraine want to cross the street, they must look first to the left, then to the right.

5)    But in England people must look first to the right and then to the left.

6)    All the buses in London have a conductor. People pay him the fee. The conductor gives them tickets and change.

7)    In Kyiv and in many towns of Ukraine we have conductors in buses, trolley-buses and trams as well.

Text 2

1)    Sashko Melnyk from the 7A form went to another  town to visit his uncle’s family.

2)    It was a modern town but not large. Its streets were straight, and a small square in the centre was very beautiful.

3)    After looking at the address on a piece of paper Sashko crossed the street and stopped near a new building. It was his uncle’s house.

4)    When the door on the second floor opened, Sashko saw his uncle. “ Oh, we are  so glad to see you! How did you find your way?” asked uncle Petro.

5)    “I have travelled already with my parents and I know how to find the road or a street or an interesting building in a town”.

6)    Well, it wasn’t difficult”, answered Sashko.

T: Children, read the texts out loud and give the titles to them.

V. Group work

T: Modern life is impossible without travelling. We often get tired of the same surroundings and daily routine. We need some relaxation to restore our mental and physical resources. You will acquaint with the proverb which prove the fact. But to read them  you have to put  the words in correct order.

Every departure has an arrival.

Poor man’s luggage is always light.

He that travels fast, knows much.

On a long journey even a straw weighs heavy.

Every journey gives you its own flavor.

The quieter you travel, the faster you get.

VI. Speaking

T: You can see John Clark’s quotation on the board:

“He that travels far knows much”.

I think these words can be the motto of our lesson. What do you think about this quotation?

Possible answers:

P1:I think it’s true. Travelling develops our outlook.

P2: To my mind, if you visit different countries, you get acquainted with their culture.

P3: Travelling develops our imagination.

P4: Travelling is exciting, it means adventure.

P5: Travelling helps us to study foreign languages.

P6: You meet different people and make friends.

Students’ suggestions:

-         They want to visit new countries.

-         I think they like to rest in different countries.

-         Very often they travel on business.

-         They like to receive new impressions.

-         People have money and time.

2.     T: What do you think when you hear the word travelling? Children work at the blackboard making a spidergram about travelling.

3.     Make a story based on the spidergram.

Один з учнів витягує карточку. Якщо вона із знаком «+», то він описує переваги даного виду транспорту, а якщо «-«, товін описує його недоліки.  Інші учні відгадують цей вид транспорту.
